Fears Of My Own
03:38
|
|
||
Once I was a little boy
with fears of my own.
Whose grown into this man,
still afraid to be alone
"Please mom and dad, don't leave me.
"You grown ups must believe me.
"You've got to guide me through this night."
When I was a teenager,
with all that that entails,
thrashing about upon that sea
-a boat without a sail.
"My friends will never leave me"
"they're the only ones who can see me"
"they've got to guide me through this life"
Now I am a man,
and I guess I'm on my own;
but like the fastest moving ships,
the struggles are all below.
"Honey you cannot leave me.
"You are the only one who needs me.
"Please, darlin' just believe me,
"I am lost without your light.
"You've got to guide me through the night."

The Widower
03:16
|
|
||
Well, the sun came out this morning,
and I hoped to find you here.
But when I came down for breakfast
I dined with the empty chair.
After all these years
I can't say why I care.
Oh, if I look inside
I'm not frightened,
I'm just scared.
Here in my labyrinth of papers
-the tattooed ghosts of dead trees-
I am peering out the windows
just hoping for reprieve.
The question to pose:
is a widower ever alone?
And if a trail stays cold,
when is it over? Has it been told?

Belarus

-----------------
Well every song’s a little fiction
that your heart turns into truth
but every line can’t be your compass
or put windmills on the roof.
So let me be your Sancho Panza.
Yeah let’s call that a truce,
‘cause I need a friend
here in Belarus.
So if you turn that globe on over
’til you see the other side,
well it could leave the misimpression
that there’s somewhere to hide
from the sinking crushing feeling
of isolation on the road
but there're no maps,
for never leaving home.
Lukashenko
he can’t be all to blame.
Politics down in Minsk
they’re a different game
they’re a different game.
So there’s no need for shouting,
and there’s no need to cry,
‘Cause everyone who sees ya,
well you just catch their eye.
But no matter what I do
No matter what I try,
the best I do
is maybe 1 in 5.
So let me be your sidekick tonight.

Keeping Score (Live)
02:39
|
|
||
Well, there's a wall outside of my door
where I've been keeping score
of the days I have left
and the ones gone by
but no one asks me what it's for.
Well, I guess they just see some lines
slowly migrating from side to side.
But if we don't keep track
of the days that are left
all we've got is to say that we're alive.
There's a man and his elderly wife
who I asked for advice
they said, "remember the loss of your own life
it's the one thing that won't happen twice."
I want to live.
I want to live, just for today.
I want to live, just for today.

Beginning [v] Ending
04:28
|
|
||
It was the first day of spring -as though that means anything.
The best I can tell it's just a way to say that we're back where we've already been.
Which leaves us without a beginning, but maybe that's the natural place to start.
It's not the way we've begun that matters, it's how we finish. That's the important part.
The beginnings we can't change, the things that went before.
But every step forward is a new note in our chord.
So we rewrite the endings with every single day.
A growing composition with every word you say.
A few thousand years before -give or take a few millennia,
people learned to work the soil and now we live nearer to Utopia.
But that ain't the way that it seems, there's people living in poverty.
And every day we see all this fear and hurt... this suffering.
The beginnings we can't change, those things that went before.
But every new step forward is another knot in our cord.
So we rewrite the endings with every single day.
A growing composition with every word we say.
